Kaunas Calling: The Time Travellers’ Favourite Weekend Escape in Europe

Have you ever wished to explore more than one century in one weekend? What about a handful of architectural styles, dozens of gastronomic influences and plenty of event choices? Offering all of the above and beyond, it seems that Kaunas, Lithuania is a perfect choice for time travellers.

Lonely Planet has named Lithuania the No. 1 European destination for 2025, and its second city, Kaunas, has earned its place as the country’s top destination. Located just a short flight or a memorable road trip away for most Europeans, it is an up-and-coming weekend destination in many ways, with UNESCO-listed Modernist architecture, flamboyant street art (grab a map or just wander the central streets!), a bustling live music scene, and a food scene buzzing with local flavour.

With temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C, it’s the perfect coolcation for a summer escape. Whether you’re into outdoor adventures while your significant other enjoys live music, or you’re craving burgers while they seek gourmet options, Kaunas delivers on every front. Getting around is easy – the compact city centre is very walkable, and buses or ride-sharing apps cover the rest. Accommodation? Plenty of choices, from chic boutique hotels in historic buildings to budget-friendly apartments. It’s the kind of city that will make you ask, ‘Why haven’t I done this before?’

The Perks of Time Travelling

As promised before, Kaunas lets you time-travel without any hazards previously seen on TV! Start at Kaunas Castle, dating back to the 14th century – usually the first stop for many visitors to the city. The romantic side of the city’s history can be found nearby in Santaka Park, where the Nemunas and Neris rivers meet – believed to be where Kaunas began. From here, stroll to Kaunas City Hall, nicknamed ‘The White Swan’ by locals. Once a prison and later an architecture school, it has been freshly renovated and now offers an interactive deep dive into the city’s history.

Next, head along Laisvės alėja (Liberty Avenue), one of the longest pedestrian streets in the region. Lined with stunning Modernist and Art Deco architecture, this boulevard is home to the most significant theatres, Michelin Guide-recommended restaurants (more on that below!), all kinds of cafés, trendy shops, and the most stylish Kaunas citizens with their pets. Book a tour at the Art Deco Museum and Amsterdam School Museum to explore the early 20th-century architectural styles that shaped the city. If you haven’t yet explored this architectural and social phenomenon, this is the best place to start.

Leave the past behind and step into the future at Science Island, located on Nemunas Island. Even before its opening, this unique science promotion centre became one of the most Instagrammed spots in Kaunas. With interactive exhibits, a planetarium, and STEAM rooms for kids, it’s where science, architecture, and innovation blend seamlessly with the peaceful island surroundings.

Feed Your Inner Time Traveller: Food & Drink Scene

The Kaunas food scene is a vibrant mix of tradition and Nordic-inspired innovation. Think hyper-local ingredients, seasonality, freshness, and serious quality. Chefs here aren’t just cooking; they’re crafting experiences. You’ll find cosy spots focusing on modern interpretations of Lithuanian classics alongside sleek restaurants championing the New Baltic Cuisine.

Moreover, the city boasts a thriving craft beer scene with numerous atmospheric pubs dotted around the Old Town and city centre. Perfect for unwinding after a day of ‘time travelling’ and soaking up the local vibe.

Outdoor Adventures and Nature Escapes

Kaunas is ideal for long walks, with over a dozen parks and urban forests. The centrally located yet ancient Ąžuolynas (Europe’s largest urban oak grove) offers tranquillity, while Panemunės Šilas, a forest by the river, invites you to relax and meditate. Those wishing to explore nature in depth are always welcome at the VMU Botanical Garden.

With around 140 km of bike paths, Kaunas is a cyclist’s paradise, offering the perfect way to explore the city (here is the path map). Not into biking? Take a boat ride up or down the Nemunas River, or enjoy the peaceful waters of Kaunas Lagoon. On sunny days, head to Lake Lampėdis, a popular spot for sunbathing and swimming, while the nearby Wake Up wakeboard park and UNO Adventure Park are great attractions for little ones.
