On October 24, 2017, the Ministry of National Defense and the Kaunas City Municipality signed an agreement on the establishment of a branch of the Vytautas the Great War Museum in the Sixth Fort of the Kaunas Fortress. The agreement indicated that the Branch of Military Equipment of the Vytautas the Great War Museum, which was operating in Vilnius, shall be transferred to Kaunas and would be loocated at the Sixth fort of the Kaunas Fortress.

On February 12, 2018, the Vilnius Branch of Military Equipment was named the Branch of Military Equipment, and on February13, the first military equipment reached Kaunas; on March 30, the last car, Timoney fire engine, was transported from Vilnius to Kaunas.
