Kaunas continues to solidify its position as one of the world’s top student cities. In the latest QS Best Student Cities 2026 ranking, Kaunas placed 142nd, climbing five spots compared to the previous edition. The city was recognised for its favourable cost–quality ratio, academic appeal, employment prospects, and positive student feedback.
What’s particularly interesting is that this perception is confirmed by a 2024 survey of international students currently studying in Kaunas, conducted by “Kaunas IN”. The survey involved around 250 students from various countries, and the results were clear: Kaunas often exceeded expectations. Over 90% of respondents stated that the city either fully met or surpassed their initial expectations.
Choosing a Place to Study Means Choosing a City, Too
In the QS Best Student Cities 2026 ranking, Kaunas received 49.5 out of 100 points (compared to 44.4 in 2024). The city scored especially high in the desirability category – 55.3 points – a significant jump, considering the ranking evaluates criteria such as quality of life, public transport, safety, cost of living, job prospects after graduation, student engagement, and internationalisation.
Local universities have contributed significantly to this success, including regional academic leaders such as Vytautas Magnus University, Kaunas University of Technology, and the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, all of which promote internationalization, innovation, and investment. Flexible study opportunities, modern infrastructure, and partnerships with Lithuanian and international companies make Kaunas an increasingly attractive destination for international students. For instance, KTU reports that, based on preliminary data from July 2025, international student enrolment increased by more than 30%.
Rankings Raise Visibility – Surveys Show Reality
So, how do international students living and studying in Kaunas actually see the city? According to the “Kaunas IN” survey, around 80% of respondents would recommend Kaunas as a study destination to their friends. Students positively evaluated many aspects of the city: they appreciated its manageable size, public transport (over half rated it 5 out of 5!), cultural life, and overall sense of safety. When asked to compare their expectations of Kaunas with their actual experience after arriving, 94% said the city either met or pleasantly surprised them.
According to “Kaunas IN” Business Department Head Andrius Veršinskas, “For many students, life in Kaunas exceeded expectations. Some arrived expecting a small, cold, and somewhat closed-off city – but were pleasantly surprised to find a cosy, active, and open place. Students gave especially positive feedback on Kaunas’ green spaces, architecture, pace of life, and the ability to reach everything on foot.”
The survey also revealed areas for improvement: students would like to see more intercultural events, clearer practical information for daily life, more signage and services in English, and additional Lithuanian language courses. “What’s encouraging is that these suggestions show a desire not to stay on the sidelines, but to integrate further and become an active part of local life and culture,” A. Veršinskas adds.

Today, Kaunas is not just a city of education – it is a hub of culture, innovation, and community. Here, students do more than just study – they create, connect, and contribute to the city’s growth and vibrancy.
“These global rankings highlight the city’s appeal, but our research confirms what matters most: Kaunas is already seen as an attractive study destination – not just regionally or in Europe, but globally. Of course, such recognition increases visibility, but more importantly, it helps us grow as a true student city,” A. Veršinskas concludes. “And ultimately, it’s not just about numbers – it’s about real experiences, meaningful choices, and the quality of life students find here.”
