Pilgrims, a feature film by Lithuanian filmmaker Laurynas Bareiša has won the Orizzonti Award for Best Film at the 78th Venice International Film Festival.
Orizzonti is the second most important program at Venice Film Festival, dedicated to young filmmakers and films that represent new aesthetic and expressive trends in international cinema, according to the Lithuanian Film Centre.
It focuses in particular on debut films, young talents who are not yet firmly established, indie features and lesser-known cinema, as well as works that address specific genres and current production, with the aim of innovating and demonstrating creative originality.
Pilgrims (Piligrimai) tells the story of Paulius and Indrė who come to the Lithuanian town of Karmėlava to investigate the circumstances around the death of Matas, Paulius’ brother and Indrė’s boyfriend.
Bareiša has already participated in the Venice Film Festival with his short film By the Pool in 2017.
