This guided tour, held in English, invites you to explore Kaunas through the lens of its Soviet past. Travelling by bus and on foot, you will uncover the stories of occupation, resistance, and daily life under the regime.
The journey begins with a drive past the former KGB headquarters towards Ramybės Park, once the city’s main cemetery. Here you will hear the story of “All Souls’ Day 1956”, a manifestation that turned into a protest, and learn about the site’s transformation and memorials.
At the Kaunas State Musical Theatre, the focus shifts to Romas Kalanta, who set himself on fire in 1972 in protest against the regime. His act sparked mass youth demonstrations, remembered as the “Kaunas Spring.”
Walking along Laisvės Avenue, you will pass one of the city’s most iconic surviving Soviet-era interiors – the donut café Spurginė (Laisvės al. 84). Dating back to the early 1980s, it remains almost unchanged. Visitors may purchase donuts here (cash only), offering a glimpse into Soviet food culture.
The tour continues by bus to the KGB Atomic Bunker Museum, a private collection of over 3,000 exhibits. Among them are devices once used by KGB secret agents, together with other original equipment from the Soviet era. Visitors can also engage with interactive displays, including demonstrations of an electric chair replica, gas masks, and sirens – an experience that vividly recreates the atmosphere of the Cold War era.
This tour offers a powerful insight into Soviet occupation, the spirit of resistance, and the daily realities of life behind the Iron Curtain.
