Kaunas Central Bookstore was built in 1953–1956. Since 1956, the bookstore opened for its first customers. To this day, it is one of the best examples of the architectural style of that time. The building was designed by architects Algimantas Mikėnas and Marija Matušakaitė, and in 1980–1983 it’s interior was reconstructed. Today, the bookstore is mentioned among the most significant objects in the center of Kaunas. The interior, reflecting the design trends of the early 1980s in Lithuania, has survived. In addition to furniture and wooden ceiling structures characteristic of the period, visitors can view a tapestry created by Liucija Banaitienė in 1982. The bookstore is rich in literature on various topics. Cultural events are held here – meetings with authors, presentations of new books, performances and exhibitions.
