In 2016

Kaunas–Warsaw railroad route was added to the railway network. The European standard gauge (1,435 mm) facilitates the transport of goods by eliminating the need to transload from one gauge to another.

By 2026

Rail Baltica will connect Kaunas with Riga and Tallinn ensuring the maximum travel speed of 249 km/h.

 

Kaunas will become a place with highest railway network intensity. It will also become the northernmost and easternmost point of the intersection of European and Russian railway tracks.

Kaunas intermodal terminal and public logistics centre
  • Kaunas intermodal terminal (KIT) is at the intersection of international railway tracks (1,435 mm and 1,520 mm).
  • Transloading is made easier by vehicle access roads and a 40-ton crane.
  • Freight transportation can be continued by A1 highway (Klaipėda-Kaunas-Vilnius) and A1 intersection with Via Baltica located nearby.
  • Cargo capacity – 55,000 TEUs per year 2–3 hours to service a container train.
  • Free container storage for up to 45 days.
  • By 2026, a 12-hectare public logistics centre will open nearby, expanding the storage possibilities.
